I have a long history of being a self-professed pessimist. About a year ago, I vowed to change my outlook on life and become more optimistic. In the last month or so, I've received so many compliments about how positive I am and about my optimistic viewpoint. (Ok, and there were some dirty looks when I said a perky happy good morning to people who hadn't had their coffee yet!)
I want you to know that you, too, can change your outlook on life. It takes a lot of hard work and determination, but once you've acclimated YOURSELF to being different, it will be so much easier to maintain that viewpoint.
Take being positive, for instance. In the morning, when you first look in the mirror, smile at yourself and announce "Today's going to be GREAT!" And I don't mean sarcastically - do it with enthusiasm! Of course, once you smile at yourself, you'll probably give a little giggle, but laughing burns calories, so that's good!
When something isn't going right in your day, think about the positive outcomes that can/will occur if you change your plans a little. A lot of disappointment can be avoided if you just shrug your shoulders and move on, if you realize that the best laid plans may come undone at the drop of a hat. (This phrase, "at the drop of a hat," originates from the American Western frontier in the late 1800s, where a dropped hat was literally a formal signal for the start of a fight. Today, it refers more to being ready quickly.)
I came across a great quote the other day: "Your day will go the way the corners of your mouth turn." Try it tomorrow. Get up, smile at yourself, and proclaim that today will be great!
