There is a Dutch proverb, "When a door closes, a window opens."
If you're anything like me (aka a human), you have times when you think you're stuck in a rut or everything is going wrong or you'll never get to be where you want to be doing what you want to do or your world is falling apart around you. What do you do at moments like that?
Your first choice is to say, "Everything is terrible. Nothing will be right again. I can't do this. I don't want to do this. Why me?" This path is not going to be of any benefit to you, but you probably already know that. If you choose this option, your forward movement will be limited because you've already put constraints on how far you can go. This is all or nothing thinking.
Your second (and, in my opinion, better) option is to go with, "This day is hard, but not every day will be this hard. I can make a plan to move through this obstacle. I may not want to do this, but I will persevere through it. I will move on." This is the harder path to take, but it will be so much more fruitful for you. The first question you should ask yourself is "What do I love doing?" Then, "How can I get to doing that?"
Life is about being your own advocate and developing yourself in the ways that you want to be developed. If, for example, you're an accountant but want to be a veterinarian, there is no one holding you back but yourself. Say it out loud, "There is no one holding me back but myself." Ok, so you agree, I hope. You've said it; it must be true!
What's the next step? Get out of your own way! Make a small, single change today that will put you on a path to doing what you love doing. Take a night class, read a book, do research online. Start small, and pick one thing to start. Find one thing you can start doing TODAY that will propel you into the next phase of your life. Get out of your own way and open a few windows to feel the breeze.
