I had someone ask me fairly recently why I felt it was important for them to say thank you to their co-workers. This person's argument was that their team worked closely together for a long time and they should already know that their help is appreciated. So I asked this person whether they liked to hear a "thank you" when they did something helpful. Guess what their answer was?
It doesn't matter if you've told a person thank you for a specific thing 1000 times. The next time they hear you say it, genuinely, they are still going to be pleased that you are appreciative. Same thing with "please." If you don't use "please," your statement seems like a command. "Take out the garbage!" versus "Please take out the garbage."
It doesn't matter if you've worked with a person for 20+ years, if it's something that's part of their job already and they're expected to do it anyway, or if you thanked them yesterday for the same thing. If you're appreciative, say it. If you are polite to others, you are more likely to get polite respect in return. Remember the Golden Rule? Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.
I've worked in the veterinary field for over 12 years. In all the different hospitals I've been in, the one complaint I hear from the technical staff is that no one thanks them enough. Not that they're not paid enough (which they're not) or that their schedules are terrible (which they can be). They aren't appreciated. I have to believe that this extends to every other type of job in the world, and even to people's personal lives. So let's take a little time to say please and thank you to those around us. It's just courteous.
And, thank you for reading my blog! Please come back again!
